Down Syndrome

Celebrated For:

Alex Mack was born with Down Syndrome, bilateral cataracts, two holes in her heart, and pulmonary hypertension. The love, support and genuine concern that her and her family have received since Alex was born was overwhelming and yet filled them with grief at first. It was the beginning of what would become a most incredible journey. Alex’s cataracts were removed in two separate surgeries when she was one month old. At around age 4, she switched to eyeglasses which simplified her life. At age 5, her pediatric cardiologist informed her parents that the holes in her heart had healed. Despite Alex’s early health issues, her developmental milestones were reached at an early: age range of her “typical” peers. A large part of Alex’s success can be attributed to many therapists and two very involved parents. Alex began private preschool at age three and continued through Pre-K, switching to public school for kindergarten. She has always been in a regular classroom.

Over the years, Alex had behavior issues, challenges of keeping her focused, and curriculum modifications. Nothing slowed her down. Some of Alex’s achievements have included: excelling in photography, making the honor roll, receiving the outstanding Journalism student award in 8th grade, and good communications and social skills. Her extracurricular activities have included gymnastics, horseback riding, hip hop dance, Cotilion dance, member of First Baptist Church Longview and active in the Youth group, and cheerleader at Longview High School. In January 2015, Alex decided to do a series of video interviews focusing on healthy living and call them “Alex Mack’s Health Tips 2015.” The thought was that she would learn something from the content of the videos that would impact her in a positive way but also she would practice her speech and social skills through the interview process. Her interviews have been with doctors, athletes, entertainers and other health related people who share their expertise on getting and staying healthy.

Alex has been featured in a issue of Charm magazine as a person that inspires others. Alex has a gift of communication and bringing people together. There have been three consistencies throughout Alex’s life: family, friends and faith. All three have grown over the years and have played a part in what has been a most incredible journey.
